This style of chair is known as "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the knobs on the black hats once worn by high-ranking administrators in Ming Dynasty. These chairs are high back and handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Ornate carvings of traditional Chinese "Ganoderma" design decorate the back splats of the chairs. The carvings are highlighted with gold touch up paint. The back of the chairs are crafted with deep curves. The front openings underneath the seats are uniquely carved into "arch" shape. The frame of the chairs are made from Elm wood with beautiful wood grain, and the rest of the chairs are made from Cypress wood. The chairs are very solid and kept in excellent condition. Original patina and wear. Circa early of 19th century.
