Antique Chinese "Butterfly" Coffer (5719), Circa 1800-1849
This Authentic Chinese Antique Coffer is also known as "Butterfly Cabinet" in China. The style of the coffer has great influence of Mongolian furniture during Qing Dynasty (Qing Dynasty in China was ruled by Mongolian people). The intricate relief carvings of traditional Chinese design motif decorate the surface of two drawers, the panels underneath the drawers and the bottom apron. The spandrels and the front apron decorate with scalloped carvings. The carvings of this cabinet are very delicate and three dimensional. There is a "secret compartment" underneath the two drawers---the place to be used for storing valuables in the old days. The detailed handwork in making this cabinet show great craftsmanship. The coffer is handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Original Wear and Patina. Handmade from Elm wood with beautiful wood grain, the coffer is very solid and has been kept in excellent condition. Circa early of 19th century.
