This Antique Chinese Idol box was originally made for display small buddha statue, or memorial tablet of loved one, or the wooden plates carved with family ancestors' names. It's Chinese tradition in old days to own Idol box like this. The box is constructed with two parts, the outside cover and the inside display stand. The outside box cover has an opening carving medallion of "dragon and scroll" design with Chinese calligraphy of "longevity" carved in the center. The inside display stand is ornately carved with "leaves and scroll" design. The carvings on the box are very delicate and highlighted with gold color. The box was handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Circa early to mid of 19th century. Original patina and wear. Made from Elm wood with natural wood grain, the box is very solid and has been kept in excellent condition.
